Tom Coyne is a drummer and music educator based in Long Beach California.


His drumming is a mix of styles, ideas and attitudes. Pulling inspiration from drummers like John Bonham, Carl Palmer, Terry Bozzio, Bill Bruford and Stephen Perkins, Tom’s musical style is an ever morphing mix of high energy, artfulness, musicality and fun.


Since graduating from PIT in 1989, he has kept a busy playing and teaching schedule. He has toured throughout America and Europe with The Last Dance and 45 Grave, recorded 6 cds, done numerous sessions and given clinics at SAM ASH MUSIC in Los Angeles,  THE DRUM ROAD TRIP in Rochester, NY and at NAMM in Anaheim, Ca.



Music Projects


After a short stint with The Chemical People in 1992, Tom found himself immersed in the Gothic Rock scene of LA., recording one CD with THE PROPHETESS (Cleopatra Records).  Eventually, in 2002 he found himself in the behind the drum set with THE LAST DANCE, taking the vacated seat of the late Ivan Dominguez.  With TLD Tom recorded 3 cd’s: Staring at the Sky (1998), Whispers in Rage (2003) and Once Beautiful (2005). He toured extensively in those 5 years, including shows at DragonCon in Atlanta and Whitby Gothic Weekend in England, culminating in the tour film Almost Beautiful in 2007.






In 2007, Tom was the drummer for the TV show “The Search of the Next Elvira” on Fox Reality TV.




In 2008, Tom joined the legendary Dinah Cancer in the revived punk/goth band 45 GRAVE. The band has played up and down the West Coast, opening shows for FEAR, TSOL, Jello Biafra and Tiger Army. Tom is currently working on the first new 45 Grave recordings since 1985 along with band mates Frank Agnew, Dinah Cancer and Brandden Blackwell. There will be a new 45 Grave CD out in 2012.






Tom has also played or recorded  with Frankenstein, Mercurine, Autumn Cannibals, The Hellblinki Sextet, Sapphire Solace, Nathaniel Johnstone of Abney Park, Rikk Agnew of Christian Death and the Adolescents,, Punk Rock Vatos, Ghost Project, Red Lily, Joel Pelletier (of the WHO Show),

Voltaire and many, many more.







Since 1990, Tom has given over 10,000 private drum lessons, given clinics and wrote his own instructional book “The Drum Teacher’s Handbook”. He traveled to Rochester NY in 2009 and 2010 to teach at THE DRUM ROAD TRIP, along with Bernard Purdie, Derek Roddy , Rod Morgenstein and Jason Bittner.




In 2009, Tom was named the Educator of the Year by United Groove Workers drumming communnity website.

Tom is a member of the Vic Firth Education team.


Since 1990, Tom has given over 10,000 private drum lessons to students of all ages. In the past few years he has become adept at working with special needs students who struggle with autism and down syndrome.
